5th Annual Road Worlds for Seniors

The Olympics and the Paralympics may be over but there is another unique championship happening now! Our commercial member Motitech Canada is running their 5th Annual Road Worlds for Seniors September 6th – October 1st.

Road Worlds for Seniors is a unique championship that allows older people and people with dementia to take part in a global sporting event – even though they might live in a long term care home. The championship makes the cyclists become a part of something bigger; a global movement focusing on physical activity and reminiscence for people that are normally not able to part in such initiatives.

For the cyclists, the Road Worlds for Seniors is all about having that feeling of friendly competition and being part of a community, between residents, care homes, and across national borders. Older people are encouraged to compete, have fun and get active at the same time. During this competition, seniors around the world pedal on to Motiview videos – a library of over 2000 videos from 40 different countries, complete with various musical playlists. Teams keep track of the distances their cyclists put in, on any type of stationary bike and distances are recorded in the Motiview app throughout the competition period.

Last September, despite COVID-19, there were still 129 teams with over 3,000 seniors participating from 7 different countries and they collectively pedaled 103,000kms in just 4 weeks of the competition! This year, Motitech has made it bigger and better than ever with over 11 countries participating! You can view current results here.

At the end of the competition, Motitech crowns an international champion for men, women and best overall team as well as one for the best support team of the year! Motitech loves to celebrate people’s abilities and achievements so they will send medals out to everyone that participates, regardless of how far they went.

Although teams from Canada are competing – no teams from BC are taking part. If you’re interested in taking part in Road World for Seniors 2022, Dan McEwen (dan.mcewen@motitech.ca) would love to answer any questions you may have.
