Announcing Symphony for Seniors — bringing music into homes and hearts

BC Care Providers Association is pleased to announce the launch of Symphony for Seniors for our community of seniors living and care homes. This is a virtual concert program that builds upon the previous Concerts in Care series and continues the partnership with Health Arts Society BC. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

While Concerts in Care held live music performances in care homes, Symphony for Seniors delivers a virtual music program to seniors across British Columbia through an online platform. The new music program transitions to a virtual space where seniors can watch pre-recorded concerts on demand. New recorded concerts will also be available on a weekly basis.  The concept of this program was developed in response to visitation restrictions and limits to recreational programming that impacted care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents in long-term care, assisted living and independent living were heavily affected as they experienced isolation from family and friends.

“Through Symphony for Seniors, we hope to bring light into the lives of care home residents as they rebuild their social interactions while bolstering their quality of life through music.” says BCCPA CEO Terry Lake. “BCCPA and Health Arts Society hopes that the new concert program can bring a sense of connectedness through music performances in a virtual space.”

The objective of the program is to promote healthy aging while supporting seniors who have been socially isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic, it also aims to comfort seniors who are living with dementia and other mental health challenges by providing community-based activities in a virtual environment.

Applications will be open from June 22, 2021 and will be available until January 2022.
