Towards the end of 2020, BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) and EngAge BC launched an online message portal for the public to submit handwritten notes, drawings, videos, and other expressions of love, hope and support to B.C. seniors living in long-term care and assisted living.
The initiative, titled #SeniorsGreetings, aimed to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation facing seniors during the holiday season which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The campaign received significant media coverage and messages poured in from across the province over three weeks. Submissions were compiled and virtually shared with residents of long-term care and assisted living homes.
“We received over 160 submissions, including drawings, handwritten notes, photos, and videos through the web portal,” says Rebecca Frederick, Senior Manager, Strategic Engagement, EngAge BC. “We thank British Columbians who embraced the opportunity to reach out to seniors with words of comfort during a holiday season that was difficult for so many.”
“We’re especially thankful to parents and teachers who encouraged their kids and students to send drawings and letters to seniors who we are sure were touched by their kindness and compassion. They definitely made us smile!” says Frederick.
