April 24, 2019 (Burnaby, B.C.) – Seniors and care providers across British Columbia are benefiting from an investment of $4.4 million to purchase new equipment in long-term care homes.
The Seniors Safety and Quality Improvement Program (SSQIP), managed by BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA), is funded through a $10 million grant from the Health Ministry. The program allows care home operators to apply for new equipment intended to enhance safety and quality of life for seniors. Those approved may receive up to $500 per publicly-funded resident.
“We’re pleased to continue working with the Ministry of Health and other partners through another round of SSQIP funding,” says BCCPA CEO Daniel Fontaine. “The investments are aimed at creating more supportive environments for residents in long-term care, and reducing injury rates among the workers who care for them.”
$2.6 million were allocated during the first period of funding in August 2018, following which BCCPA opened a second round of applications, and approved $4.4 million in funding.
123 successful funding applicants will receive more than 3,000 items such as lifts, slings, beds and mattresses, shower chairs and tubs, lighting and visual aids, sensory rooms, music therapy, and ergonomic furniture. Preventative and urgent response systems are also funded to promote both resident and worker safety.
The SSQIP fund is overseen by an advisory group, which includes representatives from the provincial government, BCCPA, Denominational Health Association, and SafeCare BC.
The third round of funding is set to open on April 30, 2019.
