A members only forum on the future of assisted living under Bill 16

BCCPA is holding a members only forum on Bill 16 and assisted living in B.C.

This half day session will run from 9 – 12:30 p.m. on January 31, 2018 and will include a morning of panel presentations. Presentations on topics such as infrastructure and staffing will be followed by roundtable style breakout sessions, and by a survey for attendees who would like to participate remotely.

“The purpose of the forum is two-fold,” says Rebecca Morris, Manager of Public Affairs for Assisted Living and Home Care, “it provides us with the opportunity to work with our partners to share up-to-date information about Bill 16, but also enables us to continue facilitated discussions about the opportunities which changing legislation may present to the organizations providing publicly funded assisted living in B.C.”.

An advisory group has been formed to guide BCCPA’s response to the Task Force and includes:

  • Elaine Price, Director of Operations, Eden Care Centre.
  • Marian Heemskerk, Director of Community Care, Elim Village
  • Cheryl Dawes, General Manager at Baybridge-Baltic, Sienna Seniors Living
  • Lenore Pickering, Executive Director, Hawthorne Care Home.

Following the forum BCCPA will collate participant responses with other data sources, to generate an overview report outlining what was discussed and how the providers can best meet the needs of today’s A.L. clients. The report will inform BCCPA’s advocacy, and will also be made available to members BCCPA assisted living members.

This session follows earlier work on Bill 16, led by BCCPA, including the Assisted Living Tenancy Task Force Review (the “Task Force”) released in July, 2017. Chaired by Tom Crump, the three-member Task Force was supported by two health authority representatives acting in an advisory capacity, and reported on key issues facing the sector, including Bill 16.

The forthcoming legislation was also a key issue brought forward by providers through BCCPA’s Listening Tour on Home Care and Assisted Living this fall. To register for this session please register online, or contact Rebecca Morris at rebecca@bccare.ca.
