Arlene Defensor – Resident Care Attendant, Fair Haven Homes – Vancouver Lodge
Since joining Fair Haven Homes in August 2022, Arlene has proven herself to be a dedicated and compassionate caregiver. Her commitment to resident care is evident in the way she promotes independence and autonomy, ensuring that each resident’s unique needs and preferences are at the forefront of their care. Arlene tailors activities to residents’ physical capabilities, enhancing their experience and prioritizing safety with conscientious attention to the Resident Safe Handling Policy.
Arlene’s dedication extends to her team as well. She willingly volunteers for extra shifts during staffing shortages and adapts to different neighborhoods, fostering a strong sense of teamwork. Her positive attitude, reliability, and proactive approach contribute to a supportive and efficient work environment. Arlene’s exceptional care, compassion, and team spirit make her an invaluable member of the Fair Haven community, consistently going above and beyond for residents and colleagues alike.

Edgar Flores – LPN, Clover Point Care Trillium
Over the years, Edgar has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and dedication to providing the highest standard of care at Clover Point Care. His patience, kindness and compassion is evident, recently he noticed a client’s clothing was askew and quietly escorted them to a private space to make adjustments, ensuring their dignity remained intact before returning them to the common room.
Edgar is not only a skilled caregiver but also a warm and understanding companion. He goes above and beyond to ensure that every individual feels safe, valued and respected. In addition to the daily caregiving responsibilities, Edgar frequently participates in care conferences with the physician, director and families, ensuring every resident feels valued and respected, participates in care conferences, and mentors new staff. His calm demeanor, reliability, and leadership make him an invaluable asset to the team and a trusted resource for both residents and colleagues.

Avril McLeod – Food Services Supervisor, Luther Court Society
Avril McLeod has dedicated 30 years of exceptional service, consistently making residents her top priority and has fostered a strong sense of belonging and joy within the Luther Court community .
Known for her famous roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, she goes out of her way to ensure every meal is special, often remembering each resident’s favorite dishes, bringing them back to a memory or special time in their lives. Avril’s compassion extends beyond the kitchen; she and her ‘Angels’ team provide comfort, prayers, and sandwiches for families during end-of-life care. When resident Roda wished for a ‘living wake’ and be surrounded by those she loved, Avril created a special celebration in her room. When she officially retires in January 2025, she will leave a lasting legacy of love and belonging. A legacy nurtured by more than 20,000 meals shared with friends.

“Avril went the extra mile to prepare special meals just for mum, not out of dietary need, but for mum’s comfort. I especially remember plates of fresh chopped veggies with a side of Ranch Dressing – mum’s absolute favourite. She often said she could ‘live on raw vegetables’ and it was such joy to see her delight at having this treat made especially for her. She often phoned me to say ‘guess what Avril made for me?’.” – Family Member
Baby Bunag – HCA, Hart House – Trillium
Baby “Bee” is a standout caregiver who exemplifies the true spirit of long-term care. She combines her clinical expertise with a deep sense of compassion, ensuring every resident feels safe, valued, and respected. Her dedication was particularly evident when she took the lead during a resident’s palliative care, ensuring their wishes were honored and the family felt supported. ”
Bee” is proactive in her role, becoming one of the first to take the Medication Administration Course and regularly volunteering to assist when needed. She has expanded her knowledge through courses in diabetes and wound care, showcasing her commitment to providing high-quality care. In addition to her skills, “Bee” goes above and beyond, taking on extra shifts, managing supplies, and supporting her team. Family members have requested on numerous occasions that Bee accompany them on outings because they trust her and they feel the love she has for the residents. Her unwavering reliability and the trust she earns from families make her an invaluable asset to Hart House.

Balwinder Gill – Health Care Aide, Evergreen Hamlets at Fleetwood an Optima Living Community
Bal has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to quality care and teamwork during her 20+ years of service. She consistently shows up for her shifts and remains positive, even when short-staffed, never complaining. Bal’s strong communication, time management, and organizational skills ensure that the needs of residents are met promptly and efficiently. Her warm, caring demeanor and positive attitude contribute to a welcoming and supportive work environment. Bal is a reliable team player who goes above and beyond to provide exceptional care. Her dedication to her residents and her ability to collaborate seamlessly with coworkers makes her an invaluable asset to the team, fostering a compassionate and high-quality care environment for everyone at the facility.

Eliana Shae – Director of Resident Programs, Lake Country Lodge
Eliana plays a vital role in enhancing the care and comfort of our residents by promoting engagement and connection. Through the Settling In program, she helps families with a detailed checklist, easing the transition on move-in day, and greets new residents with a personalized gift. She fosters a sense of belonging by connecting new residents with ambassadors to help them settle in. Eliana also uses Get to Know templates to honor each resident’s unique preferences, building stronger relationships. She ensures Meaningful Visit Kits and pamphlets are accessible to encourage enriching social interactions.
Eliana embodies core values of positivity, community, caring, and accountability. She actively fosters connections, not only within the home but with local organizations such as schools, daycares, and the fire department. Eliana has organized memorable events like a vintage car show, creating joyful moments and fostering community. Her proactive approach and caring nature ensure residents and families feel fully supported from day one.
