2024 BC Care Provider of the Year Award in Long-Term Care Nominees (Part 1)

BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) is proud to celebrate the many exceptional individuals who provide the best quality of care to B.C. seniors in long-term care, assisted living and home health at the 11th Annual BC Care Awards.

With winners being announced in January 2025, the Association would like to celebrate all nominees throughout the next few weeks. Below are the first few nominees in the long-term care category. Read on to learn more about their inspiring journeys.

Joanne Skinner

Joanne Skinner – Registered Care Aide/Activity Aid, Trillium Acacia Ty Mawr

Joanne has been a dedicated member of Acacia Ty Mawr since the age of 19, growing from volunteer to a dual role as RCA and Activity Aid. Her passion for quality care and commitment to enhancing the lives of residents, staff, and the wider community are truly inspiring. Joanne is a key figure in the Community Adult Day program, where she leads the bathing program and ensures new residents feel welcomed through personalized 1:1 care planning. Her exceptional assessment skills allow her to detect subtle changes in residents’ behavior, even for those with cognitive impairments. Joanne goes above and beyond by organizing themed events, supporting the care team, and offering calm, compassionate presence during residents’ toughest moments. Her warmth and leadership set the gold standard for care, embodying everything a caregiver should be.

Claire Davis – Housekeeper, Trillium Communities

Claire has been a dedicated member of Trillium-Woodgrove Manor for 25 years, making her the longest-serving employee. Her impeccable work ethic, compassion, and unwavering commitment to excellence are evident in everything she does. Claire ensures the home is always clean, safe, and welcoming for residents. You will never hear her say she’s too busy or she’s got so many things to do. She is a dediated, punctal, and reliable team player, even volunteered to come in on her day off to assist with urgent cleaning needs.

Sandra Groslin – Cook, Trillium Bevan Village

Sandra Groslin

Sandra consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to quality, compassion, and excellence in her role as a cook. She goes beyond preparing nutritious meals — she takes the time to understand each resident’s dietary needs and personal preferences, ensuring every meal is enjoyable and meaningful. Her compassion shines as she chats with residents during mealtimes, fostering connection and a sense of home.

Sandra’s dedication goes above and beyond. Specifically for special occasions, where she organizes themed meals that celebrate residents’ cultural backgrounds, making dining experiences more memorable. Her high standards for kitchen cleanliness and safety contribute to the overall quality of care. Beyond her role in the kitchen, Sandra volunteers to help organize community events, enhancing residents’ social experiences. Always wearing a bright smile, she creates a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Her personal touch, passion for cooking, and selflessness leave a lasting impact on residents and staff alike.

Allan Florendo – Clinical Lead, RN, Baptist Housing

Allan Florendo

Allan is a Clinical Lead RN at Evergreen Terraces and the Pointe in White Rock, known for his knowledge, compassion, and commitment to excellence. With a calm, friendly demeanor, he advocates for best practices and supports the care team to ensure high-quality care for residents. Allan diligently organizes and actively participates in resident care conferences, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to promote holistic wellness.

From a resident’s first day, Allan is there to welcome and support both residents and their families, answering questions, addressing concerns, and providing reassurance with empathy and kindness. Families often share their gratitude for the time, knowledge, and care he provides. Over the past six years, Allan has stepped up in every role needed — from direct care to administration and education. He also develops and improves processes to ensure efficiency and quality care. His leadership, mentorship, and dedication inspire everyone around him.

Angelita Isaquirre – Registered Care Aide, Heritage Square Care Corp

Angelita Isaquirre

Angelita embodies the values of quality, compassion, and excellence in every aspect of her role at Heritage Square. Her reliability, versatility, and calm demeanor ensure that residents receive the highest standard of care. No matter the situation, Angelita steps in to support the team, filling gaps in care, communicating with leadership, and ensuring resident needs are met with compassion and respect.

Her personalized approach to care is unmatched. She builds trust with residents, especially those with responsive behaviors, using individualized strategies to keep them calm and content. Angelita’s commitment extends beyond her role — she completed the Medication Administration Course, picks up Bath Aide shifts, and works seamlessly across all neighborhoods. When short staffing occurs, she is quick to adjust, taking on extra workload without hesitation. Her insight and experience make her a valued voice for process improvements, and her positivity uplifts residents, families, and staff alike.

Families know Angelita and will often confide in her if finding difficulties with their loved ones. Leadership often will discuss systems and find gaps in what’s working and what is not by connecting with Angelita, again because she is so flexible with her work that she works all neighborhoods and has such strengths with her connections with residents and families. – Nominator, Care Manager

Anyuta Boiko – Health Care Aide, Osprey Court

Anyuta consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to quality, compassion, and excellence in her role, making a significant impact on residents and the care team. Her dedication is evident in her willingness to extend shifts and work overtime, always prioritizing resident needs. Her mindfulness and genuine concern for each resident create an environment of trust and comfort, with residents and families often praising her individualized care and respectful approach.

Beyond caregiving, Anyuta played a key role in the successful opening of Osprey Court, a new 96-bed long-term care home. She helped establish efficient procedures and workflows, ensuring smooth operations. Anyuta also served as a reliable point of contact for colleagues, helping them adapt to new systems. Her leadership, initiative, and collaborative spirit have made her an invaluable team member, contributing greatly to the home’s success and fostering a positive, functional environment for both residents and staff.
