Giving Tuesday: Little Mountain Neighbourhood House Society’s Food Hub

BCCPA VP Cathy Szmaus on supporting a good cause during “Giving Tuesday”

This past spring and summer I volunteered with the Little Mountain Neighborhood House Society’s (LMNH) Yard Garden Harvest Project. This intergenerational program uses neighborhood yards to grow food for LMNH food insecure patrons. High school students, young people, middle aged folks such as myself, and seniors took part in preparing garden beds, planting, weeding, and harvesting fruits & vegetables to be donated to LMNH’s Our Food Hub. It was so fulfilling to play a small part in growing food to feed my community. See their poster here (opens new tab).

Cathy Szmaus, VP Operations and Corporate Partnerships

Our Food Hub is LMNH’s response to their community’s emergency food needs as a result of COVID and provides healthy, locally grown and sourced produce and other foods in a dignified manner. Unfortunately, more than 17 months later, they still feed the 71 families who show up at the weekly Food Distribution program, and have 52 families on their waitlist. In addition, they deliver hot meals and food hampers to 75  vulnerable seniors quarterly but there is demand to increase this to monthly.

LMNH needs your support to help meet people where they are at and to create equitable and just food access.

Tuesday November 30th is Giving Tuesday, a day when charities, business and individuals come together to celebrate giving. If you can I would encourage you to support the work of LMNH.

I encourage those who are interested in supporting this good cause to donate to Our Food Hub. Click here for more information.
