Wednesday, Feb. 24 is Pink Shirt Day! The BC Care Providers Association encourages everyone to participate in the Pink Shirt Day campaign by practicing kindness, and wearing a pink shirt, button, or pin to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying.
Pink Shirt Day was started by two high school students in Nova Scotia when they organized a school-wide protest to wear pink in response to a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They distributed pink shirts to all the boys in the school.
“I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,” 17 year-old Travis Price told the Globe and Mail. Price started the campaign along with his friend David Shepherd.
The campaign encourages people to share stories about being bullied, stopping a bully or how bullying has affected a loved one. These stories can be shared on the Pink Shirt Day website, their Facebook page or on social media.
You can also participate in Pink Shirt Day by posting a photo on social media of you and your colleagues wearing pink in the workplace. Be sure to use the #PinkItForward hashtag as Coast Capital is donating $1 to Pink Shirt Day for every use of the hashtag.
