Media Release: New report calls for greater support for family-funded home health to help B.C. seniors age in place

“Reimagining Home Health” released today by BC Care Providers Association

May 14, 2025 (Burnaby, B.C.) – A new paper released today recognizes family-funded home health as a critical part of the continuum of care for seniors. Titled Reimagining Home Health for Seniors in B.C., paper emphasizes the need for targeted funding, policy change, workforce improvements, as well as greater affordability and tax credits for families to pay out of pocket to support their older adult loved ones.

“Seniors in British Columbia have spoken clearly — they want to age in place, maintaining their independence and autonomy in the comfort of their own homes and communities,” says Margot Ware, Chair of BC Care Providers Association’s (BCCPA) Home Health Committee. “Yet, timely access to essential services like home care and home support remains a challenge.”

“Home health has long been a critical part in supporting seniors to age with dignity across the province,” says BCCPA CEO, Terry Lake. “More needs to be done across all levels of government so that home health is better equipped to support in meeting the demands the aging population and that family funded providers are seen as key partners.”

Developed by BCCPA, this paper offers a comprehensive list of recommendations to sustain home health in B.C. well into the future. These include supporting the home health workforce, improving access to services, simplifying regulatory processes and enhancing care quality, and measures to ease financial burden on families.

“These recommendations aim to ensure that seniors can benefit from a system that truly meets their needs,” adds Lake, “one that allows them to age in the right place, while also alleviating pressure on the broader health system by recognizing family-funded home health as a crucial part of the seniors’ care continuum.”

“Only by fully integrating Home and Community Health into our provincial healthcare system, with sustainable funding, can we ease the pressure on our hospitals and truly honour the needs of our aging population,” adds Ware.
