Care to Chat: Hear from Elroy Jespersen, co-founder of the first dementia village in Canada

On February 20th, join us for a moving dialogue on dementia-friendly communities featuring esteemed panelists like Elroy Jespersen, who opened the Village Langley under Verve Senior Living – the first dementia village in Canada.

In 1989, Elroy shifted careers from Community Recreation to working in seniors care as a general manager with Diversicare (now Verve Senior Living). Over the next 30 years, he was given increasing opportunity and responsibility and the development, construction and operation of numerous senior living communities throughout Western Canada.

As his retirement approached, Elroy felt that there was one more project that needed to be done. This inspiration especially came in 2015, when his wife’s aunt developed dementia and thus could no longer live alone. He knew something needed to be done to help those with dementia live more fulfilling and thriving lives.

In 2019, the Village Langley opened and welcomed its first Villagers, empowering them to feel at home, make their own choices, and thrive within their community.

Since retiring, Elroy now spends some of his time as President with Friends of The Village, a not-for-profit society whose mandate is to promote and support other organizations in developing a Village in their community.
