Family caregivers play an important role in caring for seniors, whether at home, in long-term care (LTC) or in assisted living. That is why BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) and EngAge BC are proud to celebrate the many roles that contribute to the best quality of care for B.C. seniors at the 10th Annual BC Care Awards, including the coveted Family Champion Award.
Last year, the Association awarded Kim Slater the 2023 Family Champion Award for his over 20 years of working to improve LTC in B.C. His journey began in 2001 after moving his mother into LTC, where he had realized that there was an opportunity to improve how family members and friends navigate LTC for their loved ones, especially in voicing their perspectives together to make meaningful decisions.
Kim was the founder and Chair of the Vancouver Island Association of Family councils, the first in B.C., and the Chair of the provincial Family Councils of BC. He started the Vancouver Island chapter with the intention of supporting and informing loved ones of residents in care and focused his attention on promoting quality of care and life for residents.
Through his work and leadership, Kim has created true partnership across all of B.C. between operators, governments, and families, making significant improvements to all those living in LTC.
