Continuing from our last two announcements of nominees for the Care Provider of the Year Award in Long-term Care, we are pleased to announce the final four nominees in this category. The Care Provider of the Year Award is an opportunity to acknowledge care providers who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in delivering care to residents.

Kaley Mills

Kaley Mills is a Health Care Aide in Hart House of Trillium Boutique Senior Living located in Vancouver Island. Kaley is a gentle and compassionate individual who is attentive to all residents and treats them with respect. An example of Kaley’s attentiveness would be when she helped a resident who felt self-conscious about her appearance with make-up and accessorizing, this remarkable kind gesture has encouraged the resident to engage in activities and have fulfilling days.

Kaley is also very passionate about palliative care and understands the significance to maintain and honour all residents’ dignity. She also leads the Continence Care Program and is a reliable mentor on sizing residents for incontinence products. Kaley committed herself to building this program from scratch and developed a successful system that now optimizes the team’s efficiency.

Sidney All Care

Jim Stewart is a Health Care Aide at Sidney All Care Residence in Vancouver Island. Jim has displayed nothing but compassion for residents and they find him personable as he commits his time to make them feel appreciated. An example that illustrates Jim’s compassion would be when he uses his personal time to visit the library on behalf of a resident who loves to read. He helps the resident by returning books and picking out new reads.

Jim is one of the pioneering members of Sidney All Care Residence’s Med HCA and Advanced Scope Med HCA programs. These programs were implemented to cope with staffing difficulties that resulted from the pandemic and single-site order. He also demonstrated astonishing commitment when volunteered to be on the COVID Response Team, which required him to remain onsite 24/7 in the event of an outbreak.

Maria Fain

Maria Fain is a Health Care Aide at Brookside Lodge of Sienna Senior Living in Fraser Health. Maria is described to be the epitome of excellence in care. Her team has praised her for having mastered the fine balance between completing tasks required in a day and ensuring that residents receive top quality care.

Maria was instrumental during the BSTN neighborhood project, where she took part in revamping the care that was provided to residents who were diagnosed with dementia. She completed training to become a Dementiability Champion and applied her knowledge to support residents in ways that provided them with purpose and also reduced responsive behaviors. Maria welcomes initiatives such as doll therapy, sensory therapy and job boards. She is also a Tena Champion on the floor, where she ensures the residents are in the correct products and feels comfortable. On top of all her commitments, Maria recently became a N95 mask fitter as well.

Golden Life Management

Tara Plesis is a Licensed Practical Nurse at Rocky Mountain Care Village of Golden Life Management in Interior Health. Tara is described as kind, empathetic, dependable and reliable by her team, she’ll go above and beyond expectations whenever help is needed.

A memorable incident that displays Tara’s extraordinary kindness is when she brought in clothes and personal supplies to ensure a resident who had no family or close contacts was comfortable and cared for. She also once assisted a resident with muscle pain by using her personal time to assist with a soak in the tub, her caring gesture was much appreciated by the resident. Tara has also used her own time to organize, plan and produce staff schedules for RCA and LPN.
