Province-wide Butterfly Release Event to honour memory of COVID-19 victims

On Friday, July 30th beginning at 1pm (PT) BC Care Providers Association and EngAge BC are hosting a butterfly release jointly with 24 member long-term care and assisted living operators from across British Columbia. A butterfly release symbolizes rebirth and transition, and we hope to to commemorate those we’ve lost due to COVID-19 while also acknowledging those who survived.

Approximately 1,000 butterflies supplied by a professional breeder are being distributed among the sites. Residents and their family members, companions, care home staff and local elected officials are invited to attend this early afternoon event. Media will also be invited to attend select events, while some will be for invited guests only.

Note: communities in the B.C. Interior affected by wildfire smoke are unable to release butterflies and their events will be postponed.

The butterfly release is a tradition at Menno Place in Abbotsford, who inspired BCCPA to coordinate this large scale event at multiple sites. Regrettably, due to the limited number of butterflies available sites were not able to participate after last month’s ordering deadline.

Media and other guests with further questions are asked to contact Digital Media and Communications Specialist Michelle Ho via email — michelle [at] bccare.ca.
