BC Care Providers Association and EngAge BC are pleased to feature our second panel session at our #BCCPA2021 virtual annual conference The Three Rs: Reflection, Resilience, and Reinvention. You can view the full agenda here.

Day Two will focus on  Resilience where we will exhibit how providers operated and managed their care homes during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, particularly when COVID-19 spread rapidly through the seniors’ care and living sector. We will highlight some of the successes and best practices that came to light as providers and workers demonstrated considerable leadership and courage throughout.

Mind Over Matter: Addressing Worker Mental Health & Resilience through COVID-19

With the COVID-19 pandemic extending into a “third wave,” the mental health of continuing care workers has been stretched to its breaking point.

Frontline workers have been coping with rising death rates, massive workloads, and limited access to personal protective equipment (PPE), all this while grappling with their personal stresses of contracting the virus or bringing it home to their family. Managers and leaders have also been stretched to the limit, juggling outbreak cases and deaths, managing the decrease of staff members, pulling through despite PPE shortages, and establishing protocols for visitors and social distancing restrictions.

The mental health impacts of these burdens have been excessive, this  includes grief, anxiety, fear, depression, burnout, insomnia, stress and even post-traumatic stress disorder. However, despite these challenges, the heroic staff and members of continuing care are still striving to provide the best possible care and support to vulnerable seniors.
