Augustine House, a retirement residence in Delta, B.C. and a BCCPA/EngAge BC member, has been featured in an article by the Delta Optimist for its efforts to continue social visits during the second wave of COVID-19 while safeguarding residents, visitors and staff.
The home has created an indoor visiting area inside the building’s entrance, with barriers and comfortable chairs. Patio heaters will soon be installed so that outdoor visits – the safest way for residents to interact with family and friends – can continue during winter. Visitors are screened for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 upon arrival and must wear a mask and maintain physical distancing.
Jackie Reiners, executive director of Augustine House, says many residents are being served their meals in the dining room.
“This has been received very positively by residents and staff alike,” Reiners said to the Delta Optimist. “It is lovely seeing friends visiting over their meals, appropriately distanced of course. We encourage residents to come to meals as invited, but this remains their choice.”
Augustine House residents continue to enjoy activities such as exercises, word games, social hours, and trivia during the pandemic.
