#BCCPA2020: What can B.C. learn from Dr. Jane Philpott?

It was the Easter Long weekend when Dr. Jane Philpott got the call for help from a health care facility in Ontario. Participation House — a group home for highly vulnerable adults living with special needs — was seeking support from the family physician and former federal MP following an outbreak of COVID-19 at the residence.

After an eight-week-long outbreak, 40 of Participation House’s 42 residents would eventually test positive for the virus. Staffing at the residence would fall to just 10 health care professionals compared to the home’s usual complement of 35 staff, as workers either tested positive themselves or stayed home out of an abundance of caution.

Dr. Philpott would respond to these staffing shortages by “scrubbing up” and volunteering to work alongside personal support workers and nurses for several weeks during this critical period.

It is an experience that has given her a unique insight into the challenges faced by Canada’s long-term care homes, which like Participation House, care for some of Canada’s most vulnerable citizens in a congregate setting.

Join BCCPA on September 22nd for an in-depth interview with Dr. Jane Philpott, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University and former Health Minister of Canada. In this one-on-one interview, BCCPA CEO Terry Lake and Dr. Philpott will discuss the impact of the coronavirus on seniors’ care in Canada, her experiences working on the frontlines of the pandemic, and the changes she believes are necessary to prevent and manage the “second wave.”
