What have we learned from the “first wave” of the SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic when it comes to seniors care that will help us do a better job during the anticipated future wave? This conversation is happening broadly, including among providers of long-term care, assisted living, home health and independent living here in B.C. Through an extensive consultation currently being conducted by Howegroup, BC Care Providers Association and EngAge BC are trying to review and finalize a set of 17 recommendations that will help to keep seniors in care and those who care for them safe.
We already know that care homes have been disproportionately impacted by the spread of COVID-19. There are several well-documented reasons why this has happened, some of which are as a result of chronic issues around funding for infrastructure, and a lack of urgency in addressing staffing shortages.
Acting CEO Mike Klassen was invited by host Stuart McNish of the prestigious Conversations That Matter series to discuss BCCPA/EngAge BC’s recommendations, and to explain how the sector can become more resilient in the face of the threat posed by the novel coronavirus.
