Strong interest for seniors’ care careers among Canadian newcomers

Newcomers to Canada had the opportunity to interact with seniors’ care providers and learn more about jobs in the sector at a career fair organized by the Immigrant Services Society of BC (ISSofBC) and BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) in Vancouver last Wednesday.

ISSofBC, a local non-profit which receives funding from the federal government, is working closely with BCCPA’s service provider members to attract skilled newcomers to jobs in B.C.’s seniors living and wellness sector.

The career fair, open to ISSofBC clients and the general public, was geared towards recruiting Canadian newcomers for positions in housekeeping, laundry, food services, etc. Six employers presented and held speed interviews at the fair which attracted nearly 70 Canadian newcomers.

“We were very pleased to partner with ISSofBC to host our first-ever career fair for Canadian newcomers who bring a diversity of skills and experience to the workplace, making them terrific assets to seniors’ care organizations,” says Lara Croll, BCCPA’s HHR Analyst.

“There was strong interest in these rewarding careers, as evidenced by the 60 plus immigrants and refugees in attendance. BCCPA believes this is just the beginning of a valuable partnership between care providers and ISSofBC,” Croll adds.
