KD is a remarkably giving and caring person, who for over 40 years has given generously, selflessly, and without expectation of return

Every year, the BC Care Awards celebrate care providers who go above and beyond delivering care to our seniors.

In this profile, we feature Ed Helfrich Long-Service Award winner Mrs. KD Riar from Willingdon Care Centre.

Here’s how KD was profiled by her close colleague Lance Bennewith:

KD has given her whole working life to us at Willingdon Care Centre. She has given 46 years of service as of January 2019.

KD Riar with her staff and at Willingdon Care Centre

As a young immigrant to Canada in the early 1970s, KD began working at our care home in the kitchen, eventually working her way up to shop steward. Her whole life since first arriving in here has been about working in the seniors care sector.

Ultimately, she became our contractor for support services, and has now expanded her business to include 4 more care homes in the Lower Mainland and in the Okanagan. We always say that KD always has the best people working for her, who provide the best results.

KD has always been hands-on and stays on top of every aspect of her work. All departments understand that her expectations are extremely high, and they deliver that high standard. KD’s commitment to her own work and that of her team is immeasurable, and it is not uncommon to find her in the building at 6 am.

We continually receive positive compliments from numerous residents and their families about every one of KD’s departments.

We think KD is so deserving of this award due to her outstanding commitment to the seniors of British Columbia. She loves what she does and continues to instill that in her staff.

K.D. gives generously and selflessly of herself, and without expectation of return. She will often see the good in another person before that person sees it in themselves, providing a spark that can help them reach their true potential.
