Terry Lake announced as moderator of Care to Chat on cannabis in seniors care

BC Care Providers Association is pleased to announce Terry Lake as the moderator of its Care to Chat event “Cannabis in Care: ‘Weed’ Like to Know.” The Oct 2nd event will engage panelists in a dynamic discussion about the impact of cannabis legalization on seniors and workers in the continuing care sector.

Terry Lake served as B.C.’s Minister of Health from 2013-2017, and is currently the VP of Corporate and Social Responsibility at Hydropothecary, a Quebec-based medical cannabis producer.

As health minister, Lake managed the implementation of the province’s public health response to the fentanyl opioid crisis, earning him the Canadian Public Health Association’s National Public Health Hero Award, and the Provincial Public Health Officers’ Award of Excellence in Public Health.

At Care to Chat, Lake will invite a variety of perspectives and approaches in what promises to be one of our highest-acclaimed events yet.

“As the past minister responsible for seniors care in B.C., I am really looking forward to moderating this panel bringing together expertise from the cannabis industry and care providers as we look to innovative ways of making seniors’ lives better,” Lake says.

A growing body of evidence shows cannabis may be helpful in treating chronic pain, nausea, glaucoma, anxiety and other health conditions prevalent among seniors. With these benefits, however, there are potential risks to seniors or workers who use marijuana. The panel will address the issue of access to and https://bccare.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/medcare-img22.jpgistration of cannabis products to seniors living in care.

The panel, which will include cannabis advocates, care providers, law professionals and workplace safety personnel, will examine budding issues, regarding how employers can mitigate new legal, safety or cultural risks that crop up after legalization, while considering things like seniors’ right to access cannabis for medical reasons or recreation.

Stay tuned as we announce our panelists over the coming weeks.
