BCCPA’s Care to Chat to explore impact of pot legalization on seniors’ care

In October 2018, the federal Liberal government’s pledge to legalize cannabis will become a reality and could have a significant impact on the continuing care sector, particularly on seniors and workers.

The legalization of cannabis may create new challenges for employers, such as exposing workplaces or care environments to new safety, legal or cultural risks.

Cannabis legalization is supported by a growing body of evidence that cannabis may treat chronic pain, nausea, glaucoma, anxiety and other health conditions prevalent among seniors. With these benefits, however, there are potential risks to seniors or workers who use marijuana.

On October 2nd, BC Care Providers Association will host a Care to Chat titled Cannabis in Care: ‘Weed’ Like to Know to look further into these and other issues, including the implications and practical applications of Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act.

“With the new cannabis legislation fast approaching, we need to explore how legalization will affect seniors, workers and care providers, and address concerns employers are grappling with,” says BCCPA CEO Daniel Fontaine. “We’re excited to open a new season of Care to Chat with such a timely and crucial topic.”
