What’s happening with BCCPA and assisted living?

Our members like to know what new and expanded efforts we are taking on to support seniors care in B.C. Did you know, however, about our growing efforts in support of our assisted living (AL) members?

Rebecca Morris, Manager Public Affairs, Assisted Living and Home Care

Since last year BCCPA has been engaging our AL provider members on numerous issues. Whether this includes sharing your thoughts on the Community Care and Assisted Living Amendment Act, 2016 (Bill 16) with critical stakeholders like health authorities and the Ministry of Health, or ensuring that assisted living is well represented on all BCCPA Board committees, you can be sure that BCCPA is working for you on the issues that matter most for assisted living providers.

What’s new?

  • During the spring, BC Care Providers Association’s Board of Directors passed a motion to appoint a director who represents the interests of BCCPA’s assisted living members. This motion was recommended by BCCPA’s Governance Committee and reflects an ongoing expansion of the Association’s efforts to serve members of the continuing care sector who are delivering assisted living services to B.C. seniors. That person will be appointed during our AGM in the fall.
  • BCCPA’s Events and Recognition Committee is in the process of adding a new category to the BC Care Awards in order to recognize front-line workers in assisted living.
  • BCCPA held A Forum on the Future of Assisted Living Under Bill 16, an event which boasted a specialist panel and received stellar attendance from providers across the sector. A summary report was advised on by BCCPA’s Assisted Living Working Group and was forwarded to the B.C. Ministry of Health.
  • A sold-out panel discussion was held at BCCPA’s 2018 conference entitled B.C.’s Assisted Living Landscape: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, with special guests Dr. Kim McGrail (UBC), Ron Pike (Elim Village) and Sharon Stewart (B.C. Ministry of Health).

What’s next?

  • Continued advocacy and stakeholder relations on Bill 16, including an upcoming survey on the issues of infrastructure and primary pharmacy.
  • Reports and updates on issues like Health Human Resources, quality of life and antipsychotic medications.
  • Opportunities to share your voice about strengthening seniors care in assisted living.
