Deep Cove seniors displaced by fire struggle to find temporary housing

A devastating fire that tore through Lions Manor seniors’ independent living apartments in Deep Cove in North Vancouver last Tuesday has left 66 seniors scrambling to find temporary housing.

BCCPA is calling on its members to offer assistance to the Mount Seymour Lions Housing Society, which lost 58 out of 60 units of housing during the fire. The tenants, some of whom have mobility challenges, are currently living in group lodging and hotel rooms.

The Parkgate Community Services Society has set up a fund to help those directly affected by the fire. Finding accommodation for those displaced, however, is key.

“We urge BCCPA members to look for ways to help the Mount Seymour Lions Housing Society following this tragic incident,” says BCCPA CEO Daniel Fontaine. “If you have available housing, please reach out to the Society — your generosity will be of great help to the seniors faced with such a stressful situation.”

Other public agencies are also working to secure temporary housing for the seniors, but the lack of housing available on the North Shore is making a challenge.
