#BCCPA2018 Session: Holy Family Innovation Project: Journey to a Household Model in Residential Care

Providence Health Care (PHC) has provided compassionate residential care (RC) for decades; however, with aging infrastructure and increasingly complex residents, we have been unable to provide the vibrant home environment that brings quality to people’s lives. To address this, PHC RC embarked on a human-centred design initiative called Residential Care for Me (RCfM). RCfM first sought to understand the experience of residential care from the perspectives of residents, families and staff. This was followed by co-creation and testing of ideas intended to help achieve the vision of a social model of care where emotional connections matter most, residents direct each moment and home is a feeling.

Sharing the journey and vision of RCfM and how lessons learned have been applied to HIP will provide insight into how to engage residents, family and staff in creating meaningful change, how large-scale culture change can be broken into bite-sized pieces and how existing environments can be used to test change in order to ensure the success of large capital investments in residential redevelopment.
