Ensuring there are a sufficient number of workers to care for our aging population is one of the most pressing issues facing’s B.C.’s fastest growing sector–seniors care.
Presently, long-term care, assisted living, and home health care providers report they face a health human resources crisis. An aging workforce, low-recruitment rates, high incidence of worker burnout and injury, funding challenges, and the increasing acuity level of seniors in care are all factors that have contributed to create this “perfect storm.”
On April 12th, 2018 the Vancouver Island Chapter of the Canadian College of Health Leaders will present BC’s Health Human Resources Pipeline: Exploring what’s restricting the flow of new seniors care workers and how to resolve it at Patient Care Centre Lecture Theatre, Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.
With our aging workforce and low recruitment rates, it will be crucial to attract a new generation of workers into the continuing care sector.
Providing tuition relief and bursaries for students, as well as other financial incentives to address affordability challenges, will be effective strategies to boost recruitment into the sector. Expanding the delivery of dual credit programs will also allow career-orientated students to graduate from high school ready to work in an industry that is growing quickly and offers both long-term job stability and limited risk of automation.
A comprehensive marketing and recruitment campaign, including job fairs and social media, will be needed to complement these financial incentives and advertise job opportunities in the sector.

Daniel Fontaine has an extensive background working within the non-profit and private sectors of British Columbia, as well as provincial government. A graduate of the University of Manitoba in Political Science, Daniel went on to become one of British Columbia’s most sought after political advisors and campaign organizers, working closely with provincial cabinet ministers, a Vancouver Mayor as Chief of Staff, and a leading Canadian academic.
Daniel has held his position as Chief Executive Officer of the BC Care Providers Association since January 2013.
While in this role, Daniel also holds the responsibilities of Board Chair for The Board of Directors for the Canadian Association for Long-Term Care and Board Member of the SafeCare BC Board of Directors.
Previously, Daniel has served on the Board of Directors for Douglas College, and the BC College of Psychologists
