Meet the recipients of BCCPA’s “40 for 40” bursary program: Tomy Stephan

In February BC Care Providers Association announced the recipients of its “40 for 40” bursary program. As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, BCCPA is providing all-expenses paid trips to its 2018 Annual Conference in Whistler to students enrolled in post-secondary programs in B.C.

Leading up to the conference, BCCPA will be profiling the six bursary recipients from the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and University of Victoria.

Meet Tomy Stephan

Tomy is a full-time student of the Master of Engineering Leadership in High Performance Buildings program at UBC. While designing buildings for clients, Tomy tries to achieve a balance between ensuring the comfort and well-being of occupants and minimizing the building’s environmental impact.

In his application for the “40 for 40” bursary program, Tomy identified an opportunity for greater design innovation in senior living as well as improving working conditions for care workers.

“It’s necessary to properly assess and better understand seniors’ expectations and needs during the design process,” says Tomy.

He strongly believes that to achieve these objectives, it’s important to work closely with residents, health care https://bccare.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/medcare-img22.jpgistrators and clinicians to identify what seniors’ needs are.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend BC Care Providers Association’s 2018 Annual Conference. I’m looking forward to being a part of this innovative ‘shift’ in B.C.’s continuing care sector, and being able to provide an engineer’s perspective on new ideas and technologies,” says Tomy.

During the three-day event, which will focus on the complexities and opportunities in the continuing care sector, Tomy plans to make the most out of all the educational workshops, networking and discussions.

“It will be a great occasion to develop the huge potential for senior-focused technology.”
