The Department of Social Services will host an information session on the Diploma in Gerontology program on June 12th, 2018 at 6 p.m. in Room B149 at Langara College.
For the first time in Canadian history, seniors now outnumber children. A rapidly aging population has created a growing demand for services to meet the needs of seniors and their families, and educational programs to address the challenges and opportunities in the field of aging have never been more important.
Earlier this year, Langara College announced it will be offering an interdisciplinary two-year Diploma in Gerontology beginning in the fall of 2018. The unique program is the only entry-level diploma program with a concentration in gerontology offered in B.C.
Through theoretical knowledge, skills-training and hands-on practical experience students will learn how to work with seniors, their families, community organizations and professionals. The program includes field placements in gerontology service settings that will provide opportunities for students to apply their skills, knowledge and ethics. Field visits and guest speakers will introduce students to the network of services available in the community.
“Langara College’s gerontology program positions students for a career in a field where there is an increasing need to improve health outcomes and quality of life for seniors, provide support to prevent social isolation, and advocate for their well-being,” says BCCPA CEO Daniel Fontaine.
BC Care Providers Association, as part of its #BecauseBCCares campaign, is bringing attention to the tremendous career opportunities in seniors’ care.
In addition to more seniors requiring care, existing workers are beginning to retire. To address this significant health human resource challenge, it is important to prioritize the training of workers and highlight lucrative career opportunities in continuing care.
“Seniors’ care is one of the fastest-growing sectors in British Columbia, and academic institutions like Langara College are leading the way by training strong candidates to meet the needs of our aging population.”
