In this nominee profile, we feature Sarah Reiter from Beacon Community Services in Salt Spring Island for her work enriching the lives of seniors.
Why did you decide to work in seniors’ care?
I was lucky enough to have a friend suggest I become a care aide, and although I was hesitant at first, I fell in love with the job. Since then I’ve happily continued my education to keep me in the field.
What’s been the most rewarding experience of your career?
Learning nothing is ever in our control. Life is going to carry on with or without us and it’s how we show up that really matters. Taking the time to enjoy the moments and really be present in them.
What do you wish people knew about working with seniors?
The rewards are endless—knowledge, kindness and humour. It changes your perspective on life.
What’s your favourite part about working in seniors’ care?
Helping people live their lives to the fullest. Being capable of making a difference in a person’s day, week, year.
