Every year, the BC Care Awards celebrate care providers who go above and beyond delivering care to our seniors.
In this nominee profile, we feature Lynda McDermott from Hawthorne Seniors Care Community in Port Coquitlam for her work enriching the lives of residents.
Why did you decide to work in seniors’ care?
Well to be honest, at first it was just a job. Hawthorne Care Center was built a short walk from where I lived. I was young and I decided I would work there for to make enough money to travel. Little did I know, that job would become a lifelong career—that the world would come to me from the beautiful seniors that I met that came from all over the world..
What do you wish people knew about working with seniors?
What do I wish people knew about working with seniors is that it is very rewarding. I found that they give more back to me than I give to them. Most of the seniors I’ve met are so thankful for anything you do for them. They still have life to live. Many are young at heart and have knowledge to give if you only you have time to give to them.
Why is this nomination meaningful to you?
I’m very much in awe and very humbled by this nomination. To be rewarded for something that you’ve chosen to do because it’s something you love doing is like the icing on the cake.
BC Care Award winners will be announced in early January. The awards ceremony will take place on February 19th, 2017 at the Fairmont Empress Victoria. Registration is now open for BCCPA members and invited guests.
