BC Care Awards – Care Provider of the Year Nominee Emmanuel Co

Every year, the BC Care Awards celebrate care providers who go above and beyond delivering care to our seniors.

In this nominee profile, we feature Emmanuel Co from Glenmore Lodge in Kelowna for his work enriching the lives of residents.

Why is this nomination meaningful to you?

Being recognized by such a prestigious organization is a big milestone in my career in the health care field. This recognition will serve as a drive for me to be better both professionally and as a personally. This kind of job entails passion and commitment and can be very difficult. We do not seek recognition, but to be acknowledged for your service is both gratifying and humbling.

What has been the most rewarding experience of your career?

I love every part of my job. It is however the end-of-life care that is the most significant and touching. Being able to provide comfort to a dying person who has lived his or her purpose and to be able to provide emotional support to their loved ones is very fulfilling. It is through this work that I am able to touch other people’s lives and in a way make a small difference in alleviating their pain.

What do you wish people knew about working with seniors?

Seniors are still individuals. I can never stress enough the importance of personalized care and the need to develop both a professional and personal relationship with each resident. These people come from different backgrounds. They do not share the same values, beliefs and principles. They have different histories. These factors make up their personhood which is unique, beautiful and deserves to be celebrated.

BC Care Award winners will be announced in early January. The awards ceremony will take place on February 19th, 2017 at the Fairmont Empress Victoria. Registration is now open for BCCPA members and invited guests.
