For this year’s awards we received a record number of submissions, and the judges had to choose several excellent candidates.

And now, we are honoured to announce our first winners.
Care Provider of the Year (Home Care)
Mari Green
Nurse Manager
Beacon Community Services (Victoria)
Here is what Pat Shultis, LPN, has to share about Mari:
Mari has worked for Beacon Community services as a manager since 2003. She has demonstrated amazing flexibility and patience with the many changes in home support since that time. Mari is kind and compassionate and you know that she will always be truthful and supportive towards clients and staff. She is often one of the first to arrive and last to leave and has a mind that manages to keep track of the many complex situations she is faxed with while always remaining available to encourage and support staff. She is a rare talent and works without complaint long hours supporting others. She deserves recognition for her exemplary commitment, kindness and dedication.
I know that staff appreciate Mari’s open door and advice – but, I do not know that she has ever been formally recognized for all that she does and continues to do. Since she is a Manager it is “expected” that she will do all the things she does but – in my opinion she is an unsung hero!
Care Provider of the Year (Residential Care)
Tasia McLean Warren
H & H Total Care
The Hamlets at Westsyde
Here is what Bob Attfield (Director of Operations) and Sarah Matthews (Director of Care) have to share about Tasia:
Tasia is an outstanding care aide that provides care to seniors on one of The Hamlets at Westsyde geriatric floors.
Last year just before Christmas Tasia posted a request on the Logan Lake Facebook page asking for donations of cards to brighten the Holiday Season for residents that do not have any family. She arranged for the cards to be dropped off at a local store and she would take care of distributing them. The response was overwhelming … over 700 cards and letters were received from not only the residents of Logan Lake but also Kamloops, Savona, Ashcroft and as far away as Blue River! Elementary and high school students got into the sprit and made cards with original poems and greetings. The art class at Westsyde Secondary painted pictures to be given to residents as gifts. In addition, over 100 gifts and Christmas stockings were donated by various families and community organizations. All this because of Tasia’s effort to reach out to the community to help make our residents lives brighter over the holidays.
Tasia, on her own time, sorted the cards and gifts based on resident preference, addressed them and with the help of fellow co-workers delivered them to the residents … all 176!
Tasia has also been very involved in raising awareness in our community about Alzheimer’s by promoting our “Forget Me Not” garden. She has been instrumental in supporting efforts to raise money for extra park benches and a garden that will be enjoyed by our residents with dementia.
She was also instrumental in identifying improvements to the work flow on the floors all with a focus on the continual improvement of the quality of care. An example is the simplifying of the daily task sheets that make it easier for care aides to track their work activity and hence free up time from https://bccare.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/medcare-img22.jpgistration duties to provide additional care. This is characteristic of her leadership and dedication to the residents who call The Hamlets their home.
Tasia always sports an infectious smile that raises the spirit of everyone she comes in contact with and provides nothing but exemplary care to our residents. For special occasions, such as Halloween and theme events she always takes the time to plan and wear a costume, again bringing smiles to those she comes in contact with.
She is truly an extraordinary care aide that makes such a difference everyday in the lives of those she cares while continuing to build the culture of caring at the Hamlets.
We are proud to nominate Tasia for the BC Care Award and we are proud that she works for H & H Total Care.
Tasia’s contribution to the continual improvement of the quality of care of the residents has been recognized on numerous occasions by management including the DOO and DOC of the Hamlets by way of gift cards. Management also recognized her efforts with a cash award in the spring of 2016.
Congratulations to Mari and Tasia! Your awards will be presented to you at a ceremony in Victoria, BC on February 20th. Details of the event to follow.
