BCCPA Members Kick Off Summer Festivities

Summer has arrived! That means a number of our members have kicked off the season with some unique and creative activities. Over the past week Menno Place in Abbotsford, Delta View Campus of Care in Delta and Royal City Manor in New Westminster have held special events at their home.

Menno Place CEO Karen Baillie releases her butterfly at the Butterfly Release Celebration.

Menno Place in Abbotsford hosted their first-annual Butterfly Release Celebration for seniors, families and staff to honour loved ones who have passed away. The event was held in the one-acre courtyard at the centre of the campus of care.

Residents, family members and staff were encouraged to purchase butterflies for release on this special occasion with all proceeds going to the gardening programs for the Recreation Team.

“This is the first time we are holding this special celebration at Menno Place”, says Joanne Sweeney, Recreation Manager at Menno Place. “It is a thrill to see seniors release their butterfly and watch those butterflies flutter about, sometimes resting on individuals before they set off into their new world.”

More than 200 people participated in the celebration, including Abbotsford Deputy Mayor Patricia Ross and City Councillor Les Barkman, who were on hand to say a few words. Both made personalized buttons that commemorated the day and shared a person whom they were remembering as they released their butterflies.

“What a joyful and wonderful event,” says Karen Baillie, CEO of Menno Place and President of the BCCPA. “A care home does not need to be a place of depression and isolation. We create moments of joy for seniors every day. We provide excellent end-of-life care, both palliative and spiritual care. Our care and values shone through today in a big way.”

Royal City Manor in New Westminster recently held its annual vow renewal for residents of the home where five couples renewed their wedding vows in a ceremony at the event. Last year was the first year that they held the event with seven couples renewing their vows.

“At Royal City Manor we really celebrate our couples,” said Recreation Manager at Royal City Manor Leslie Torresan in a recent interview on CKNW radio. “We feel very strongly that it’s important to keep them together and celebrate their love.”
