Wrap up: A day of connection, collaboration, and learning at Care to Chat’s Home Health Edition

On November 26th, BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) hosted a special Care to Chat: Home Health Edition at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. This one-day symposium brought together home health leaders and providers for a day of learning, collaboration, and connection.

The event began with updates from BCCPA CEO Mary Polak and Home Health Board Representative Danny Birch (Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Hero Home Care). Both spoke about BCCPA’s role in advocating for home health providers, noting home health’s increasing role in helping fill the growing gap in seniors’ care due to limited long-term care capacity.

Following this, the day unfolded with a series of insightful sessions. The Greater Vancouver Community Services Society’s CEO James Challman, RN Clinical Manager Yasaman Bonyanpour, and Home Support Manager Niraj Wala delved into strategic workforce development and leadership. They emphasized the importance of building a company culture based on shared values – one where team members support each other to create a stronger workforce.

Building on the theme of strengthening the home health workforce, SafeCare BC’s CEO Saleema Dhalla and Director, Workplace Health and Safety Programs Anna Richter explored strategies to improve psychological safety in the workplace to improve retention. They also shared some strategies to reduce workplace injuries and WorkSafe BC claims.

Continuing the discussions on workforce support, session sponsor Surge Learning emphasized the role of accessible education in empowering staff through in-house training and education. By leveraging adult learning principles and mobile-friendly training, Director of Learning Experience and Design Natacha Dube and Content Manager Sabrina Whaley emphasized that education should be easy to access, right from an employee’s phone.

The day concluded with a peer-to-peer discussion, where participants exchanged challenges and shared ideas on topics like strengthening operations, securing the workforce, creating quality, and quality assurance.

Together, these conversations and shared ideas help inspire and pave the way for a stronger and more connected home health, a very important part of the seniors’ care sector.
