With negative temperatures and snowfall warnings across British Columbia, BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) and EngAge BC are reminding the public to consider the needs and safety of seniors in their communities who are impacted significantly by current weather conditions, and to take necessary action to help support them.
The Association urges the public to take proactive measures to prevent falls and injuries in their communities by clearing sidewalks in front of their property, but also to extend a helping hand to neighbours especially seniors and others who may struggle with mobility. Property owners are also reminded of their obligation to clear sidewalks promptly to maintain safe pathways, as outlined in municipal bylaws.
Current snowfall conditions severely impact seniors in a variety of other different ways. It disrupts the delivery of home support services, where caregivers and support workers may face difficulties reaching their clients’ homes, ultimately impacting the delivery of essential care, medications, and meals. Seniors may also face challenges trying to leave their homes to access essential services, such as grocery shopping or going to appointments. As a result, seniors may struggle with social isolation during the cold winter months.
