Let’s make “Nurses—Not Nannies” the new mantra for IENs. It’s time to get serious about the human resources crisis
Amidst a global healthcare workforce shortage, Canada has signaled that it is looking to attract over 400,000 new immigrants each year and accept 20,000 essential healthcare workers as permanent residents in order to respond to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
And yet, many foreign-trained health care professionals (such as internationally-educated nurses, or “IENs”) are languishing in jobs they are overqualified for as they try to navigate their way through Canada’s time-consuming and complex immigration and credential recognition.
It’s such a common story that it has become a cliché—the physician working as a taxi-driver, the nurse working as nanny. And no wonder: it has been estimated that the average nurse spends over $15,000 to achieve RN licensure over the course of 2-3 years!
Ensuring that Canada has the human capital to care for our aging population will require political will and a systemic reboot to ensure that we attract and certify international talent to care for Canada’s aging demographic.
Please join us on November 10th, 2021 for the latest Care to Chat dialogue —now in its 9th season— where our panel of healthcare and immigration experts will answer questions such as:
- How can Canada become a preferred destination for global nursing talent being courted by other major international competitors?
- What would a centralized, streamlined system for credential recognition look like if put into action in Canada?
- How can federal and provincial governments work together to create immigration pathways that prioritize nurses and care aides/personal care workers?
- What are the ethics of hiring foreign-trained nurses from their home countries?
In addition to several special contributors who will join us during the hour, we are delighted to have an excellent panel of experts:
- Terry Lake, CEO at BC Care Providers Association and former BC Minister of Health (Moderator)
- Cynthia Johansen, CEO & Registrar, BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
- Michael Sandler, Executive Director, Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of BC (NNPBC)
- Peter Rekai, JD Certified Specialist, Rekai LLP
