140 new long-term care beds announced with the expansion and redevelopment of Mission Creek Landing

Last Friday, B.C. Ministry of Health announced 140 new publicly funded long-term care beds with the redevelopment of Misson Creek Landing (Kaigo Senior Living), a BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) member site, in Kelowna, B.C.

Set to open on October 31st, 2024, Mission Creek Landing will undergo its first phase of redevelopment and expansion and will include 131 long-term care beds, with 30 of those bed being new. The second phase of construction includes the remaining 110 new publicly funded beds, which is expected to open in late 2026, bringing a total of 241 long-term care beds.

“We are excited to have the first phase of the new [building] nearing completion,” says President and CEO of Kaigo Senior Living, Kevin Svoboda, “we will not only see the complete rebuild of the existing long-term care home, but also the addition of 140 beds in a new and modern building.”

BCCPA praises the announcement, as similar requests for proposal projects are key in fulfilling increasing long-term care capacity in B.C.

“We need a lot more of these,” says BCCPA CEO, Terry Lake in an interview with Global BC. “It takes that long from an RFP process to where it’s nearing completion. And given the demands for long-term care, we need to be announcing more RFPs. It’s a funding model that is less expensive than the health authority owned and operated builds.”
