Burnaby, BC (April 5, 2022) — Today, Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, and Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, announced that the province is preparing to make fourth doses of the COVID-19 vaccine available, six months after a third dose for people 70 and older, and other prioritized populations. The province will start by offering the booster to people living in long-term care and assisted living (regardless of their age) and to those who are clinically extremely vulnerable.
Terry Lake, the CEO of BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) and EngAge BC issued the following statement in response this news.
“BCCPA is pleased to see that a plan is in place to begin rolling out a second booster shot to vulnerable British Columbians, including residents living in long-term care and assisted living,” says Lake. “Throughout the pandemic we have seen the important role which timely vaccinations play in mitigating the catastrophic impacts which this virus can have on residents and staff.
“We understand that the Ministry is carefully monitoring the evidence, as to whether boosters will be required for long-term care and assisted living staff. The Association continues to be committed to providing any necessary assistance to expedite the https://bccare.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/medcare-img22.jpgistration of additional doses, should they be considered appropriate for this population.
“While people 70 and older can expect invitations for their fourth doses shortly – including those who reside in congregate living settings such as independent living – we hope that the province will consider making boosters available onsite in independent living homes, as to ensure that residents are able to access boosters as easily, and as early as possible.
“We are appreciative of the efforts of the Ministry and are hopeful that these decisions will move us one step closer to the end of the COVID-19 crisis.”
