BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November 23, 2018 in Vancouver. Members will be updated on last year’s key accomplishments and future plans for the organization and will elect new BCCPA Board Members. In addition, four policy motions will be presented for discussion and approval. Following the AGM, BCCPA will hold its second Care to Chat event in a three part series, entitled Risky Business.
The policy motions which will be discussed at the AGM deal with important issues facing providers across the continuing care sector. With regards to assisted living (AL), one motion suggests a review of the existing AL funding model to better support operators particularly with the implementation of Bill 16 (i.e. Community Care and Assisted Living Amendment Act, 2016).
Another motion dealing with assisted living, as well as home support, advocates for appropriate support and funding to implement Quality Assurance models in both areas. This motion reaffirms an earlier recommendation from the BCCPA home health care report entitled Health Begins at Home (2018) to implement a quality assurance program. This motion also aligns with the work BCCPA is currently undertaking in home support and is exploring further in assisted living to improve the delivery of seniors care.
Building on this year’s Continuing Care Collaborative event and the Situation Critical paper released earlier this year, a third motion advocates for the need to address health human resource (HHR) issues, namely the worker shortages facing the sector. This motion advocates for the development and implementation of a robust HHR strategy to focus on improving the recruitment and retention of in-demand health care workers, including Health Care Assistants (HCAs).
The final policy motion at the AGM will discuss the need to reduce the number of people on long term care waits. This motion advocates for B.C. to establish a target to ensure at least 65 percent of those waiting for a long term care bed can access one within 30 days as currently exists in Alberta.
BCCPA expects an informative and stimulating discussion amongst members attending the AGM on these policy resolutions which, if adopted, will continue to influence the organization’s work over the next year. If adopted, BCCPA will continue to advocate on behalf of its members in these important areas as to address the issues facing providers across the continuing care sector, and ultimately improving the quality of seniors care in B.C.
