David Sheard to be keynote speaker for Care to Chat on Butterfly Model of Dementia Care

BC Care Providers Association is pleased to announce Dr. David Sheard, CEO/Founder of Dementia Care Matters, will be the keynote speaker for our next Care to Chat: The Butterfly Household Model is a Culture Change Movement – Butterflies are spreading in Canada.

The Butterfly Model of Dementia Care which began in the United Kingdom 22 years ago is now spreading across five countries, and winning multiple awards from regulators.

The Butterfly Model is based on the core belief that designing for dementia is not about buildings first, but about developing a transformational culture of care. Dr. Sheard will outline how this requires organisations to adopt a model of emotional intelligence, attached leadership, and “matched households” where “being” this permeates the organisation before they “do” it.

Come and hear what the first seven Butterfly Home Projects in Canada have found how this looks, sounds and feels like. You will not want to miss this emotional, challenging and visionary presentation.

Workshop with David Sheard: New Culture Nursing, New Culture Care: The Butterfly Model Gives People the Glue

Following the Care to Chat on November 15, join us for a workshop with Dr. Sheard.

Changing a culture of care is not for the faint-hearted. Dementia care training doesn’t work on its own if detached from an organisation’s core belief and motivation to deconstruct itself to create a new culture.

In this three-hour workshop participants will experience what it really takes to create a care home where people living with dementia flourish, live longer, fall less, and eat more. Hear about how people are not sedated, why “behaviours” disappear, and where people come “alive” again. In all Butterfly Homes, staff feel it’s no longer like coming to work.

Leave this workshop with practical first steps, and the glue of The Butterfly Household Model of Care Checklist.
