Transforming Community Heath Care: Strategic Workforce Development and Leadership

As the demand for senior living and care services continues to rise, the need for a skilled, dedicated workforce and effective leadership to maintain the highest standards of care also grows.

This session will examine the essential role of workforce development and leadership in shaping the future of Community Health. Participants will explore strategic approaches to go beyond traditional recruitment, retention, and training, to not only address current challenges but also equip organizations to meet the evolving needs of the sector. Focusing on the alignment of organizational mission with daily practices, this session will provide insights on how to integrate the mission into everyday operations, fostering a workplace culture that motivates and inspires staff.

Attendees will learn leadership strategies that promote continuous learning, build resilience, and empower teams to excel in an evolving workplace, taking part in exercises to incorporate learning into their workplace.

About the speakers

James Challman (CEO, Greater Vancouver Community Services Society)

James has been CEO of GVCSS since 2016.  An experienced executive, James’ professional background includes leadership roles with various community organizations in Alberta and BC.  His extensive experience covers a broad demographic of service responsibility including developmental disabilities, brain injuries, seniors, immigrants, youth, and families.  With his results oriented approach, he has successfully orchestrated service quality improvements and organizational growth.

James has a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University along with a BSc in Psychology from the University of Alberta.  His commitment to community is demonstrated by his extensive volunteer background as a Board member with various sports, arts, and community organizations in BC and Alberta.

Yasaman Bonyanpour, RN (RN Clinical Manager, Greater Vancouver Community Services Society)

Yasaman is a Registered Nurse and has worked in diverse settings, dedicated to providing compassionate and client-centered care. Yasaman’s career began in acute care at various hospitals where she gained her clinical skills, transitioning into facility care and managing long term clients and palliative-care patients.  In 2022, her focus shifted to home health with the goal of improving quality of life of clients and their health outcomes.

Yasaman holds a second Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies on Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice from the University of British Columbia.

Niraj Wala, BScP, MAS (Home Support Manager, Greater Vancouver Community Services Society)

Niraj has extensive experience in workforce optimization & staffing services, also leading several projects related to the home support services with several health authorities in British Columbia.  He holds a Master’s in Administrative Science – Major: Global Health and Human Services from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and undergraduate in Pharmacy from India.

Niraj joined the Leadership Team of GVCSS as the Home Care Manager in April 2023.
