BCCPA announces new study on understanding vaccine access challenges in independent living

In support of National Immunization Awareness Month, BC Care Providers Association is pleased to announce our study to understand vaccine access challenges for older adults in seniors independent living communities. The study will present an opportunity to advocate for equitable vaccine access for those living in congregate living but outside of the publicly subsidized health care system.

The study will focus on 6 vaccines that are important for older adults, especially in promoting independence and healthy aging, namely:

  • COVID-19
  • Flu/influenza
  • Pneumonia
  • RSV
  • Shingles
  • Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccines

The following objectives will be met:

  1. Identify any available data on vaccination rate among seniors for priority vaccines.
  2. Understand the awareness, attitudes, behaviours and beliefs of seniors about the immunizations available for priority vaccinations.
  3. Identify current resources and programs available to promote vaccination among seniors in British Columbia, and identify any gaps. In particular, determine if special consideration is warranted for adults living in Independent Living given the congregate setting.
  4. Identify any barriers/obstacles, such as lack of information, cost, vaccine hesitancy, health records, or barriers to access that may impact seniors’ ability to get vaccinated.
  5. Identify opportunities and make subsequent recommendations for the government and BCCPA to enhance vaccination rates among older adults living in Independent Living communities.

This study is made possible with the support of Pfizer.
