The Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services has released its Report on the Budget 2027 Consultation, with several BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) priorities reflected in this year’s recommendations. The inclusion of long-term care modernization, capacity expansion, workforce stability, and supports to help seniors age in place marks an important advocacy success for BCCPA, our members, and B.C.’s seniors’ care sector.
Earlier this year, BCCPA encouraged members to participate in the Budget 2027 consultation process and help advance our shared seniors’ care priorities through grassroots advocacy. The final report references input from several BCCPA members and partner organizations, including Baptist Housing, Broadway Lodge, Independent Long-Term Care Councils Association of BC, Denominational Health, CareRx, Sienna Senior Living, and Jewish Seniors Alliance of BC, demonstrating the strength of a coordinated and collective sector-wide effort. By consistently reinforcing these key messages throughout the consultation, BCCPA and its members helped ensure seniors’ care priorities were recognized in the Committee’s recommendations.
Under the healthcare category, the Committee recommended that the provincial government:
- Accelerate the construction of long-term care homes by establishing clear timelines for delayed projects and creating a capital funding program that supports non-profit and health authority operators to build and renovate long-term care homes.
- Modernize the long-term care funding model to better reflect actual service delivery costs, including the increased costs associated with the expansion of provincial bargaining within the sector.
- Invest strategically to support seniors to age at home safely by:
- Expanding access to publicly subsidized home support;
- Developing a cross-ministry mandate to prioritize the home health model, expanding
workforce training, and integrating the equipment needed to keep seniors safe; and, - Establishing a tax credit for seniors who are paying for their own home support.
BCCPA is pleased to see these recommendations included in the Committee’s report. This reflects the impact of our collective advocacy and represents an important step toward strengthening seniors’ care across the province. We look forward to continuing to work with government to advance these priorities further and support their inclusion in Budget 2027.
