BC Care Providers Association is honoured to recognize another five nominees for the BC Care Provider of the Year in Assisted Living. In this post, we celebrate those who exhibit exemplary commitment and passion in delivering and fostering the best quality of care for seniors in assisted living across B.C.
Kathleen Spraggett – Dining Room Server, Trillium West Shore Village
For Kathleen Spraggett, food is more than a physical necessity, it’s an anchor and a source of routine and connection for residents at Trillium West Shore Village. Guided by this philosophy, Kathleen transforms every dining experience into something meaningful, adapting her pace and approach to meet each resident’s unique needs. When someone struggles physically or emotionally, Kathleen offers gentle encouragement and reassurance; when independence is what they crave, she provides quiet support and space.
She is extraordinarily patient and attentive, noticing what others might miss, like subtle changes in mood, appetite, or behaviour, treating these observations as essential to caring for the whole person. These observations often lead to early interventions and emotional support that makes a real difference in residents’ lives.
Kathleen’s empathy shrines through in countless moments, offering comforting words, listening to cherished memories, or simply sitting in silence with someone who feels alone. Through every interaction, she reminds us that true care is not just about meeting needs, it’s about creating a sense of belonging and hope. Kathleen’s presence turns ordinary mealtimes into experiences that nourishes residents holistically.

“It is evident that Kathleen cares about our residents in everything she does. She has a balanced sense of fairness and does her best to ensure that all are treated equally, with dignity and respect. Kathleen is compassionate and caring, anticipating the wants and needs of our residents. She is consistently cheerful and shows genuine interest in each resident she contacts every day.” — Chef Robert Kroeger

Darla’s commitment shines in the quiet, powerful moments like sitting with someone who feels lonely, offering reassurance during times of confusion or fear, or ensuring that personal care is delivered with the utmost respect. She notices the small details that make a big difference – warming a resident’s hands, brushing their hair so they feel more like themselves, or patiently explaining care routines to ease anxiety. These gestures, though subtle, speak volumes about her dedication.
Beyond her daily tasks, Darla is a tireless advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves, ensuring every voice is heard and every need met.
