National Nursing Week 2024: Celebrating the nurses of today and tomorrow

May 6 to 12, 2024 is National Nursing Week, an important time to recognize the deep commitment and compassion of nurses across the province. With this year’s theme of “Changing Lives. Shaping Tomorrow,” BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) and EngAge BC would like to celebrate all nurses for their positive contributions and integral role in caring for seniors across the care continuum, today and tomorrow.

Aligning with this year’s theme, nurses play a crucial part in shaping the future of health care and seniors care. That is why it is important to celebrate the work of nurses in the seniors living and care sector, who will also lead the future generation in caring for our aging population, whether in long-term care, assisted living or home health.

In February, BCCPA and EngAge BC commenced its first Practical Nurse (PN) Access Training Program cohort in partnership with Discovery Community College in Campbell River, a vital step in meeting the healthcare demands of our aging population and in creating more opportunities for career advancement for health care assistants looking to become nurses in the sector.

BCCPA and EngAge BC have also been hard at work developing an Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) Toolkit. Recognizing the invaluable contributions of IENs to the senior living and care sector, this resource is designed to streamline their entry into the field. It provides comprehensive guidance for employers to navigate the regulatory landscape and assist IENs in securing roles aligned with their competencies. Members can anticipate access to this tool at the beginning of June. Stay tuned for updates!

In shaping the future of the seniors care sector, the Association recognizes the importance of investing in a thriving workforce so that it is better equipped to meet the growing needs of our aging population.

Whether a licensed practical nurse, a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse, or a registered psychiatric nurse, BCCPA and EngAge BC would like to thank all nurses across the province for their dedication to providing the best care for our seniors.
