A B.C. senior who won a $4.2 million jackpot after an impromptu trip to the grocery store said she “wouldn’t dream of moving out” of her retirement home.
Eileen Bevis, a resident at Chartwell Langley Gardens, said that despite her newfound riches, the seniors’ residence is her home and she is happy there.
“Why would I move? I love Langley Gardens and I love Chartwell,” Bevis said. “Even during the pandemic, I am never alone. I have made some close friends here and I say hello to everyone. That is the way it should be. We are a close group, like family.”
Bevis said she plans to invest most of her winnings, as well as donate to several charities.
“Just today I’ve donated $45,000…I’m working on the list still,” Bevis told CTV News Vancouver. She has already donated to the Langley Seniors Centre, the Food Bank, Cancer Research and an animal protection society.
Bevis is a “big giver,” says her friend of 20 years, Bev Atchison.
“She’s always wanted to help people. She’s a driver at the seniors centre, she goes and drives people to their appointments and things,” Atchison said to CTV News Vancouver. “She’s got a heart of gold and she’s always been a giver.”
While Bevis will not be leaving Chartwell Langley Gardens, she will be moving into the home’s penthouse suite.
“(I) Can’t go on a world tour because of the travel restrictions and right now that doesn’t bother me at all,” she said. “If I can go eventually that would be great.”
