#BCCPA2018 Session: Influenza in Seniors: Helping to Protect a Vulnerable Population

In 2015, a high-dose trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) was licensed in Canada to provide better protection against what is well recognized as a devastating, frequently debilitating and life-threatening disease. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) in their annual Influenza Seasonal Report stated, “The high-dose TIV should provide superior protection compared with the standard dose TIV for adults ≥65 years of age.”

In the fall of 2017, Manitoba added Fluzone® High-Dose to their influenza program for their LTC residents, and Ontario has announced it will be added to their universal program in the fall of 2018.  At this time, British Columbia does not offer the high-dose formulation as part of their public program for seniors. The challenge faced by those who care for seniors is that the role that public health plays in protecting the population as a whole may not be the best option for the individual or the LTC community.

The goal of this session is to demonstrate that a shift in mindset is required to ensure that residents of long-term care facilities have access to improved vaccines targeted for seniors to improve quality of life. The issue will be discussed utilizing clinical data from the long-term care setting, the current policy attitudes in B.C., and the perspective of the patient to provide a 360 degree view for the community.

Join us for this interactive session, guided by a geriatrician, pharmacist and educator, which will leave participants with a new appreciation of the burden of influenza and its complications in people 65 and older, the role of flu vaccinations, and their role in the process of information dissemination and shared decision-making.
