2022 Slate of Candidates for the BCCPA Board

The following are part of the slate of candidates for the BC Care Providers Association Board of Directors. BCCPA will hold its Annual General Meeting on December 6th, 2022 where members will vote to approve the slate to serve a three-year term on the BCCPA Board.

Gavin McIntosh, CPA-CA, The Care Group

Gavin is the Vice President of Finance and Operations at The Care Group (“TCG”). In this role he oversees the management of 10 long term care, assisted and independent living homes.

He works closely with TCG’s care teams to support the delivery of excellent care to its residents. Gavin has a passion for quality care and developing great care providers. He has strong relationships with his colleagues in the local Health Authorities and works to build partnerships in care.

Gavin currently sits on the Board of The BC Care Providers Association, and has been on the Finance and Audit committee for a number of years. Gavin brings to the Board a decade of experience operating and building resident focussed long term care homes for BC’s seniors. As a Chartered Accountant he also brings a deep understanding of the finance and funding of our industry.

He is a past Board Member of the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) and past Board Chair of Downsview Services for Seniors in Toronto. Prior to joining The Care Group he worked as a Director with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Toronto and Vancouver.

Ron Pike, Elim Village

Ron has worked in the Senior Living/Care industry for the past 15 years providing Seniors Leadership to the organization of Elim Village. ELIM operates two campuses; a 25-acre site in Fleetwood, Surrey and a 10-acre development in Garrison Crossing, Chiliwack. ELIM is home to over 700 residents.

Since coming to ELIM in 2007, Ron has served in four roles from Director of Care Operations to his current role as CEO. Over the course of this time he has established a strong track record of leadership, business insight and strategic thinking.

As a progressive, growing organization, ELLIM has provided Ron with a unique perspective across the entre spectrum of Senior Living and Care. His direct experience in land development, community design, construction and service provision has given him an understanding of both the challenges and opportunities that need to be leveraged in order to ensure quality of life for older adults both now and into the future.

Ron is committed to collaborating with partners across the sector, having served on a variety of boards and committees over the years, and regularly speaking at conferences and events on Senior Living. Ron is serving his second term on the BC Care Providers Board and is the Chair of EngAge BC. He is also a member of the Denominational Health Association Board.

Ron has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and a Master’s Degree in Administrative Leadership. He lives in Abbotsford, BC with his wife and three children, and loves spending time golding and exploring in the beautiful province of British Columbia.

Jennifer Anderson, Sienna

Jennifer C. Anderson is a leader who brings people together and breaks down cultural barriers to foster an environment of trust, collaboration, transparency and strong leadership. She is recognized for her ability to drive accountability across her leadership team, by rallying her team members towards a common vision and inspires to achieve the results and outcomes necessary for optimal organizational performance. She exercises empathy and courage through tough situations and creates the space to have crucial conversations and move the dial towards what is right for the organization. Respected as a credible voice, she is a transformational leader known for her thought leadership and proven accomplishments in guiding and directing large complex organizations through change while significantly increasing customer experience and satisfaction and driving solid financial performance.

As Executive Vice President of Long Term Care for Sienna Senior Living, Jennifer oversees 8,000 team members and residents in two provinces and is accountable for $550MM in annual revenue. Jennifer’s mandate is to develop and implement a new Long Term Care platform to improve all aspects of resident care and experience. Jennifer is a vital contributor to the company’s ambitious $600MM/7YR redevelopment plan.

Prior to her role with Sienna, Jennifer was the Chief of Operations and Service Excellence at the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB). Jennifer is proud to be the first Canadian female leader to hold the position of Chief of Operations and Service Excellence with one of the largest insurance organizations in North America. As COO Jennifer’s was successful in bringing stability to operational results sponsored many projects to modernize core service delivery and improve customer experience. As Vice President of Operations with Alarmforce Industries Inc., she successfully turned around the entire operations by implementing significant improvements through major brand and product transformation as well as digital platforms. These efforts resulted in stabilizing the organization and driving healthy operational and fiscal metrics.

Jennifer is known for her ability to build solid relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. She engages with boards of directors, earns their trust and builds credibility by delivering the right results. She invests the time in understanding the “why” of the status quo and advocates for change when needed.

Marc Kinna, Baptist Housing

As President & Chief Executive Officer, Marc leads Baptist Housing across British Columbia. With 21 senior living communities in Victoria, Greater Vancouver, and the Okanagan serving over 2750 residents, Baptist Housing offers community programs, volunteer opportunities, adult day program, affordable housing, home support, independent supportive living, assisted living, and long term care.

Marc currently sits on the board of Denominational Health Association and is also the Past-President of the BC Seniors Living Association. Marc holds a business degree from the University of British Columbia and an MBA from Trinity Western University.

Salimah Walji-Shivji, AgeCare

Salimah received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1999 and Master’s in Clinical Social Work degree in 2000, both from the University of Calgary. In addition, she completed her Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Manitoba in 2003. Salimah is a registered Social Worker with the Alberta College of Registered Social Workers.

As a Social Worker, Salimah’s Clinical experience includes Mental Health Trauma, Burns, as well as community Social Work specializing in the area of harm reduction with persons affected by HIV/AIDS. Salimah’s health law practice spans over a decade and has focused in areas of physician bylaws interpretation and advice, quality assurance, transition services, consent to treatment, public health, continuing care, policy and risk management matters. Salimah is cognizant of the interplay between frontline clinical work and the law and strives to provide her clients with practical relevant legal advice. Prior to leaving Alberta Health Services in September of 2015, Salimah held several positions within the former Calgary Health Region (where she joined in 2003) and Alberta Health Services including Legal Counsel, Associate General Counsel and General Counsel. As General Counsel of Alberta Health Services she led a team of approximately 90 professionals and was responsible for legal services, information & privacy and the corporate secretary office for one of the largest employers in Canada, with approximately 100,000 employees and an annual operating budget of over $13 billion. In November 2015, Salimah joined AgeCare, Communities of Care and Wellness as their Vice President, Corporate Services & General Counsel wherein she has responsibility for IT, Communications, Marketing, Social Work, Corporate Services and Legal Services. In 2020, Salimah took on the role of AgeCare’s Chief Operating Officer.

Salimah was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2004. Salimah is a recipient of the Avenue Magazine Top 40 under 40 Award (class of 2010), the Women in Law Leadership Award (2013) and the Canadian Corporate Counsel Community Builder Award (2018). Salimah is an active member of the Canadian Bar Association where she has served and continues to serve as Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association National Health Law Section. Salimah is an Adjunct Professor within the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary wherein she teaches a course she wrote; Social Work & The law. She spends countless hours volunteering in various capacities within the Ismaili Muslim (Aga Khan) Community and has held board seats on the FOCUS Canada Humanitarian Assistance Board, the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation Board, the South Calgary Primary Care Network, the United Way and the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter. Salimah was recently appointed to the Human Rights Commission and was privileged to recently be honored with the King’s Counsel designation.

Salimah loves spending time with her husband, Hamid, and her son Caleb and daughter Raya. She also enjoys spending time with her friends, traveling, reading and great food!

Riz Gehlen, Carefree Manor

Riz Gehlen is the owner/operator of Carefree Manor and is also a principal at Promerita Group. Prior to that, he served as CFO of one of Canada’s largest full continuum seniors care businesses, where over a thirteen year tenure, he led the growth of that organization from a four facility business to one of he country’s privately owned portfolios with over thirty sites from British Columbia to Ontario.

Riz is on the Executive Committee of the BC Care Providers Association Board of Directors as Treasurer and is Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee.


Erroll Hastings, Zion Park Manor

Erroll Hastings is the Executive Director of Zion Park Manor, a not-for-profit long term care home in Cloverdale, BC with both publicly funded and private beds.  He has 27 years’ experience in long term care and 21 years’ experience as a health care manager.  Erroll has worked as a Care Aide, Registered Nurse, Care Manager, Director of Care, and Executive Director in various homes in British Columbia and Alberta.

Erroll works extensively with the Health Authority, his fellow administrators/owners, and external bodies to ensure that the voices of affiliate providers are heard and concerns are addressed.  He currently serves as a member of the Fraser Health Partnership Advisory Group as an affiliate representative.  He has also served as a Board Director and Vice Chair for HEABC for the last five years, and has been the chair of the Fraser Affiliate network (administrators/owners group) since 2013. 

Erroll believes strongly in information sharing, transparent practices and working collaboratively with industry figures to ensure that the needs of his home and the affiliates’ group as a whole are met.  He has a passion for serving seniors and believes that the biggest impact he has had on their lives over his 27 years in the industry is by empowering, supporting and enabling others to provide excellent care and services.

Erroll is also a Registered Nurse and has a Human Services Administration degree from Grant MacEwan University and a Master of Arts in Leadership degree with a health services specialization from Royal Roads University.
